The Apple and the Crook Crows Citronella Artist Book narrates the story of an outbreak of West Nile Virus in New York City during the Summer of 1999. This was the first outbreak of this zoonosis in the Western Hemisphere. Many Crows (the host for WNV) were dying and 59 people became infected with encephalitis and viral meningitis of which 7 died. The origins of this arbovirus outbreak were traced back to a Chilian flamingo at the Bronx Zoo
