Drawing from a range of historical and popular literary references, the exhibition investigates zoonotic diseases – illnesses carried by animals that can be transferred to humans. Lithography and drawing are used as a method to create immersive experiences through which visitors can explore their relationships with these creatures and the world around them. Zoonoses offers a creative perspective on fear, disease and animals through fairytale iconography, rhymes, artist books, sculpture and wallpaper.
New works include Run Rattus Rattus Run (above) animation by Dr Zeynep Akcay, Griffith Film School, lithographs by myself and Concerning Cats and Toxoplasmosis works inspired by Lady Francesca Wilde’s Irish Myths. Zoonoses runs concurrently with Lynley Dodd’s Scarface Claw Exhibition.
Events include Spooky Stories after dark in torch light, thank you Penny Nelson for the image and Art + Science = Soiree Panel Discussion with panelists David Harris, Donna Davis, Nicole Crosswell, Geoff Thompson and myself. Other events include artist talks, adult polyester plate workshop, children’s fly making and collaborative wallpaper.

This exhibition is primarily focussed on exploring concepts surrounding ‘Zoonoses’. The mechanism of lithography is used as the primary medium to explore perceptions of animals in the context of fear of disease.
Really honoured to be a part of this exhibition. This annual award plays a pivotal role in the growth of the Moreton Bay Regional Council Art Collection. The $10,000 acquisitive prize exhibits 15 artists that reflect the collection’s focus of culture, identity, spirit and sense of place.
This year’s artists include Kathryn Blumke, Nadine Cameron, Jon Cattapan, Jun Chen, Chantal Fraser, Denise Green, Nicola Hooper, Winnie Luk, Donna Marcus, Tom Moore, Rosella Namok, Robyn Stacey, Alex Standen, Charlotte Tegan, and Alick Tipoti.

My work titled Little Peter Rabbit has a Fly Upon his Nose (2018) explores and pays homage to the Bancroft families research into entomology, parasitology, rabbits and zoonoses. The work draws on the Tale of Peter Rabbit (Potter, 1902) to discuss Tularaemia (Rabbit Fever) and how rabbits and horseflies, along with ticks, mosquitoes and rodents are hosts to this zoonotic disease.

Hosts by Brisbane artist Nicola Hooper presents her study of the concept of the animal body as a host or vessel for disease through the medium of lithography. Her works reference people’s often contradictory perceptions of animals in the context of fear of disease.
